Leatham, Violet Louise

Violet Louise (Allen) Leatham of South Venice, Florida, died at Venice Regional Medical Center on April 16th after a long illness. She was the widow of Chester Faye Leatham, and the mother of Judy C. Stilwell and the late Kathleen Ann Grimaldi.
She was born in Spalding, Jamaica on October 2nd 1920 to Samuel and Vanessa (Hosey) Allen. Her sister, Lyra Coppock, of Chico, California is the last surviving member of their immediate family.
Vi learned secretarial skills in school, and taught them to her younger sister, Lyra. They both enlisted in the British Army ATS, and after training in Canada, they were stationed in Washington, DC, receiving coded messages. Toward the end of the War, she met her future husband Chester, and they were married on June 2nd, 1945.
Vi and Chester settled in the Washington, DC area, where she held jobs with the federal government, including the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and the Atomic Energy Commission. She retired from the government when Chester had to take early retirement due to his health, and they moved to Florida in 1973. They lived at Leisure Lakes until 1980, when they moved to South Venice. Chester died in 2010.
At the time of her death, Vi was a resident of Windsor of Venice Assisted Living. She is survived by her daughter, Judy Stilwell, of Germantown, MD, her grandchildren, Rev Mary Laymon of Cincinnati, OH, Heather Boersma of Kalamazoo, MI, Kimberly Mock of St. Petersburg, FL, and her six great grandchildren, Leo, Ruby, and Iris Tanja, Braxton and Justin Thomas, and John Amundson.
Her family will receive visitors from 9:00 am until 10:00 am Saturday, April 20th, with funeral services following at 10:00 am in the Sabal Chapel at Farley Funeral Home in Venice. A brief reception will be held immediately following the service, with interment later in Venice Memorial Gardens.
