William J.(Bill) Matthews Jr., 68, passed away in Lexington, KY on Friday October 12, 2012. He was born to the late William and Genevieve Matthews on June 12, 1944 in Newark, NJ, and grew up in Sarasota, FL. Bill attended St. Martha's and graduated from St. Leo College Prep, Dade City, FL in 1962, received a BA in business from the University of Florida in 1967. He and Cynthia Kouns were married in 1969 while Bill served the US Navy in Norfolk, VA during Vietnam. They lived in New Mexico for 25 years, in Albuquerque, Roswell, and Las Cruces. In 1995, they made their home in Lexington, KY where Bill worked in real estate and auto sales. Bill was a Kentucky Colonel, a UK Fellow, University of KY Friends of Music, University of Florida Alumni "Gator Club". He lived his faith and was committed to family above all else. Bill is survived by his wife, Cynthia Kouns Matthews of Lexington, two children; W. John Matthews, III (Georgetown, KY) and Elizabeth M. Henrich (Nolan T, III) , and one granddaughter, Genevieve Austin Henrich (all of Dayton, TN), a sister, Patricia Wierichs (Frank) of Venice and brother, David Matthews (Bonnie) of Bradenton, many nieces, nephews and cousins and friends. Interment will take place at Sarasota National Cemetery on Monday, Dec. 3 at 11:30 AM. Friends will gather after at the Log Pavilion of Myakka River State Park. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Good Shepherd Organ Fund, 533 East Main Street, Lexington, KY 40508.
