Willis R. Smith, Jr., 94, a native of Indiana and 15 year resident of Sarasota died on Saturday. Mr. Smith graduated from Pendleton High School in 1937, Purdue University in 1941 and was commissioned into the Navy at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. He served four years active duty in the Pacific Theater and 18 years in the Naval Reserves. Mr. Smith was employed for 30 years by the Department of Defense. He was a charter member the Indianapolis Epworth Methodist Church. He has been a weekly volunteer at the Sarasota National Cemetery. Mr. Smith was proceeded in death by his wife of 67 years, Roverda J. Smith. He is survived by a son, Willis (Skip) R. Smith III (Suzi) of Brookston, IN, a daughter, Penny C Trego (Philip) of Sarasota, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Services will be held Thurs. Feb. 21, 2013 at Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home, 7454 South Tamiami Trail; visitation at 9:30 AM, services at 10:00 AM. Burial will be at Sarasota National Cemetery at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Sarasota National Cemetery.
