'A noted artist and longtime Sarasota resident, Jay Scott Pike, passed away September 13 after a brief illness. He was 91. He leaves behind his wife of 67-years, Margi, their six children, eighteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
Scott Pike was born in Philadelphia in 1924. At the age of 16 he enrolled in the Art Students League in New York City. After a hitch in the Marine Corps he resumed his studies at Parsons School of Design in New York, at Syracuse University, and then at Ringling School of Art in Sarasota.
As his painting career evolved, illustration supported his growing family. Mr. Pike worked with both Marvel and DC comics and created covers for such magazines as Master Detective. He worked with advertising agencies in New York for clients such as Ford, Proctor & Gamble, TWA, and Pepsi Cola.
Mr. Pike's work won many honors and he is well represented in collections both here and abroad. He is probably best known for his oils of exotic nudes. Portraits were also an important part of his painting career; He had over 150 commissioned portraits with subjects ranging from babies to bank presidents.
Prints of his pencil drawings of nudes first became popular when they began appearing in Playboy Clubs during the 1980's.'
