Jewell I. Young

Jewell I. Young, 90, Bradenton, died April 16, 2003. He was born Jan. 18, 1913, in Hedrick, Ind., and came to Manatee County in 1978 from Delray Beach. He taught at Southport High School in Indianapolis, where he was an athletic director and basketball coach. He retired as a manager for the Wandell & Reid mutual fund firm. He played professional basketball in the old NBA for six years. He was a graduate of Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., and was named an All American basketball player for two years. He served as a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy during World War II. He was a Methodist. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Helen; a son, Richard of Evansville, Ind.; and a brother, Wayne of The Villages. No memorial service is scheduled. National Cremation Society, Sarasota chapter, is in charge.
