Bessie Berryman Obituary
Berryman, Bessie
Jan 17, 1927 - Dec 27, 2017
Bessie Frances Berryman (Townsend) passed away peacefully on Dec 27, 2017 at the Village on the Isle retirement community in Venice, FL. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, John William Berryman, Jr., by her daughter Laura (Stephen) Brown of Venice, FL, her son Lee (Susan) Berryman of Daytona Beach, FL, 5 grandchildren (Adam, Mark, Brantley, Julie and Kristen) and 7 grandchildren (William, Emilia, Vivian, Nikolai, James, Cecilia and Benjamin). She is predeceased by her loving daughter Lynne (Brian) Robertson formerly of Spingfield, VA.
Bessie was born in Charlottesville, VA on Jan 17, 1927 to Cyrus and Maybelle Townsend. She graduated from McIntyre High School in 1944. After graduation, she met her future husband John Berryman who was an electrical engineering student at the University of Virginia. They married in the University of Virginia Chapel on Aug 31, 1947 after John's graduation and commissioning as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy.
Children followed with Lynne born in 1950, Laura in 1952 and Lee in 1955.
After early career and military moves, they settled into Springfield VA in 1963 where they would spend the next 25 years. There, the children would attend public schools and Bessie began work at the Woodward & Lothrop department store. Bessie thoroughly enjoyed her years in the finance department at the Springfield department store until retirement in 1988. Their next step was a move to their future retirement home in Venice FL.
They purchased a new home in Plantation Woods in the Plantation Golf & Country Club in 1988. There Bessie was active in church, community, golf and bridge organizations. She would often refer to this period as the years they lived in paradise. They would remain until 2013 when they moved to Village on the Isle. Her friends and family will always remember Bessie for her wonderful smile and engaging personality.
There will be a memorial service at Mark Manor, Village on the Isle on Wednesday, Jan 24th at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice, 220 Wexford Blvd, Venice FL 34293.
