David A. Speir, Jr., 91, Sarasota, died March 21, 2013. He was born on his father's farm in Byran County, GA on December 2, 1921. He always said he moved to Florida as soon as he heard about it. Actually, he was two years old when his father sold the farm and the family moved to Jacksonville, FL. He graduated from Georgia Military College in 1942. He was called to military service in February 1943. He served in the Thirteenth (Jungle) Air Force in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, New Guinea and the Philippines. After the war he graduated from The College of William and Mary, earned a Master's degree from the University of Florida and also studied at the University of Havana and Florida State University. He accepted a teaching position in the Panama Canal Zone in 1951. He was promoted to Assistant Principal of Balboa High School, then, after two years, promoted to Principal of the school. His next promotion was to the position of Supervisor of Instruction and Curriculum of the secondary schools, followed by that of Assistant Superintendent of the Secondary Schools. In 1973 he was appointed Superintendent of Schools of the Panama Canal Zone. The Canal Zone Schools included one College, four senior high schools, four junior high schools, eighteen grammar schools, over 30,000 students and more than 3,000 employees. He was the last surviving former Superintendent of the Canal Zone Schools. Mr. Speir was a member of the Council of Chief State School Officers, Phi Delta Kappa, the American Association of School Administrators and many other professional organizations. He was predeceased by his first wife, Peggy Overstreet Speir. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Pauline L. Speir; son, David A. Speir III (Damaris); daughter, Beth Speir Coldiron (Clark); 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Services will be announced later. Arrangements are by Jennings Funeral Home & Crematory.
