Dorothy Alyce MacFarlane, 74, of Osprey, FL, formerly of Quonochontaug, RI, passed away on Nov. 7, 2012. She was the beloved wife of John R. MacFarlane for 49 years. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Harriet (Anderson) Dauenheimer.
Dorothy grew up in Valley Stream, NY, graduating from Valley Stream Central High School in 1956. She married her husband, John, in Providence, RI, in 1953. In 1972, she and her husband moved to Sarasota with their newly formed family of five. In 1973, she and her husband acquired a very small insurance agency, and together grew it to one of the largest locally owned insurance agencies in Sarasota. In 1976, they moved from Sarasota to Casey Key, FL where Dorothy and John have lived for the past 36 years.
Dorothy and her husband also maintained homes in Las Vegas, NV and Green Hill, RI. She was a member of the Sterling Club in Las Vegas, NV and the Westerly Yacht Club in Westerly, RI. As well, she was the secretary/treasurer of the North Casey Key Assn. from its inception until 2010.
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved meeting new people and genuinely wanted to know all about them. She was caring and giving to family, friends and colleagues. She was the matriarch of her family. She loved cooking, entertaining, gardening and her beloved pets. She and her husband traveled with a passion, and together have seen much of the world, while meeting new friends along the way.
In addition to John, Dorothy is also survived by her daughter Erica Davis of Osprey, FL, her son Keith MacFarlane (Crissy) of Siesta Key, her son Kurt MacFarlane of Tucson, AZ and 10 grandchildren. She also leaves her twin brother Edward G. Dauenheimer (Silvia) of Cambridge, NY and younger brother John A. Dauenheimer (Lorraine) of Sarasota, FL.
A celebration of life will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 7750 Beneva Rd., Sarasota, FL on Friday, November 16th, 2012 at 3:00 pm. Arrangements made by Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Humane Society of Sarasota.
