Edward Littlehales Obituary

Littlehales, Edward F.
Jul. 19, 1920 - Feb. 5, 2016
Edward F. Littlehales of Venice, FL and Skaneateles, NY died February 5, 2016.
He was born in Syracuse, NY, and spent summers on Skaneateles Lake. Ed made his first visit to the family cottage via trolley and steamboat at the age of six weeks, and last summer celebrated his 95th birthday on the cottage's lakefront porch with family and friends.
Ed, an environmentalist before that word was fashionable, graduated from the NY State College of Environmental Science and Forestry. His thirty-year career with the US Forest Service included forest economic research and National Forest administration. He served in Washington DC, Atlanta and Denver. In Denver, he was Director of Information and Education for the Rocky Mountain Region, and represented the Forest Service at various international forestry conventions.
Ed was proud of his military service. He was drafted into the US Army as a Private during WWII, was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict, and served in the Reserves, resigning as a Major.
He is survived by his wife Susan; daughter Barbara (Ken) Hearst; three grandchildren: Shannon Hearst, Lauren (Shaine) Power, and Cory (Erica) Littlehales; and four great-grandchildren: Mallory and Canyon Power, Hayden and Avery Kate Littlehales. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Edna, son William, daughter in law Suzanne, and grandson Christopher.
Ed was a friend and mentor to many. He advocated for women in the workplace. He nurtured cooperation between private business, local governments and the National Forest Service. He had a laugh and a heart as big as the outdoors that he passionately loved. If he ever met you, you were his friend for life. A Celebration of Ed's Life will be held on Saturday March 19, 1:30 pm at Village On The Isle in Venice, with a summer Celebration at the Skaneateles cottage.
Memorial donations may be made to the Littlehales Scholarship Fund at the NY State College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Office of The President, 224 Bray Hall, One Forestry Drive, Syracuse NY 13210.

We have countless fond memories Ed and Edna, our dear friends and next door neighbors at the cottage from 1972 onto nearly the present. With a huge heart and ready wit, he would be there to help in a heart beat when he sensed the need. I was just 16 and he 52 when we first met on our beach as he bounded down the stairs, his right hand extended, booming "Hello there! You must be Johnsons! I'm Ed . . . " Such fond memories indeed. He and Edna will be in my thoughts and prayers. Of course my condolencses to Barbara, Ken and all of his family and friends

A truly fine man who was such a pleasure to meet, and talk with. I can still hear his booming voice. Godspeed to this great American.

We saw Ed in 2014 during our last year at the camp. He looked great and we will always remember his smile and laugh.

How sad to hear of Ed's passing. He was such a unique man. My visits with him were always one of my highlights of my time on Skaneateles. I will miss him and all his wonderful stories of his early days on the lake. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Ed was a great spokesperson for forestry and sustainable development. He was outgoing and always up-beat. I first met Ed at a meeting in CO the year I joined the faculty at what was then the NYS College of Forestry. I'm blessed that our paths crossed often throughout the years.
