Furman C. Arthur, 90 of Sarasota, died peacefully on July 19, 2013. Son of Furman C. and Nell Vinson Arthur. He was born November 15, 1922 in Richmond Hill, Long Island, NY, spending most of his adult life in Sarasota.
A WWII veteran, Brud served from 1942-1944 in the 3rd Photo Squadron, 20th Air Force as a bombsight and automatic pilot specialist on Saipan and Guam.
After graduating from Bethany College in 1948, and later graduate work at Syracuse University, Brud became a career journalist and public relations professional. He worked at Bethany College, NYC Cities Service Oil Company and as Managing Editor of the Sarasota News.
In 1960 Brud became the first employee of New College (later New College of Florida), as the Public Relations Director until his retirement in 1985.
Brud authored the book, "New College: The First Three Decades" which chronicled the college's early history. He stayed involved with the college up to his death, conducting historical archival interviews.
Soft spoken, kind and a respected mentor to many New College students and staff, he was known for his integrity and professionalism. He was also a passionate golfer and bocce player.
Following his career at New College, he free-lanced as a columnist and feature writer for newspapers in Pittsfield, MA, Reno, NV and San Miguel, Mexico.
A dedicated community volunteer, Brud served as past president of the Sarasota Art Association, Selby Library League and the Ringling Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association. He was also a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Sarasota.
He is survived by his partner Barbara "Bobbie" E. Watt; daughter Robin A. Draper and husband Mike Davis; son Samuel E. Arthur and wife Beth Brown Arthur; grandchildren Sandy Arthur and James Draper all of Sarasota, FL.; sisters Jean A. McKown, Sarasota; and Carolyn A. Johnston, Englewood; multiple nieces and nephews; and Beth Arthur, mother to Brud's children.
A celebration of life will be held at Lakehouse West, 3435 Fox Run Road, Sarasota, FL, September 7th at 3 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to New College's Furman "Brud" C. Arthur Endowed Book Fund, c/o The New College Foundation, 5800 Bay Shore Rd, Sarasota, FL 34243, (941)487-4800.
