Miller, Jack L.
Mar. 27, 1926 - Sep. 23, 2013
Jack L. Miller, 87, passed away peacefully at his Sarasota home on Monday, September 23, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born March 27, 1926 in Chicago IL to Roy and Cora Miller. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Miller and siblings Marilyn Smith of Sarasota and Robert Miller of CA. Jack graduated from Fenger High School in Chicago in 1944. Shortly thereafter, Jack enlisted in the army and served in WWII. Already an accomplished jazz musician at an early age (trumpet), he was a proud member of the 174th Army Ground Forces Band in Europe and later, a member and performer with the "Jazz at Noon" Club at the Showboat Chicago River in Chicago, IL.
After the war he attended Wilson Junior College and majored in accounting. Exhibiting a keen business sense, he successfully owned and operated LouArt's - one of the largest Drive-In restaurants in the city of Chicago during the height of their popularity in the late 1950's and early 60's.
Jack moved to Tampa, Florida in 1969 where he established a Gingiss Formalwear franchise. In 1972 he opened a second location in Sarasota and moved the center of operations to Main Street. Eventually he changed the name to Mr. Formal and with the help of his family, expanded the operation to 12 locations throughout Florida along with a thriving wholesale business. Along the way he also opened and operated Sta-Brite Cleaners with 5 locations and Modern Bride - a renowned bridal shop in downtown Sarasota that was largely operated by his loving wife Ruth. He semi-retired in the late 1980's at which time he pursued his love of golf as his primary occupation. An excellent golfer, he scored 5 hole-in-ones during his lifetime and scored a 75 at age 75. He was a founding member of Gator Creek Golf Club and a long time member of Sara Bay Country Club and the Hendersonville Country Club in Hendersonville, NC.
He is survived by his two children Daniel (Karen) Miller and George (Kathy) Miller both of Sarasota; two loving grandchildren, Alex and Nick Miller of Sarasota; his life partner Iris Buoscio; and a nephew, Jack (Sue) Smith of Bradenton. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial contributions may be made to Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota.
