Jawn Sandifer Obituary

Jawn Ardin Sandifer, 92, Sarasota, Sag Harbor, N.Y., and Manhattan, died Sept. 1, 2006, in Sarasota. He was born in Greensboro, N.C., and retired as a New York State Supreme Court judge, Appellate Division, from 1969 to 1990. He graduated in 1935 from Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, N.C., where he was the first freshman on the varsity debate team. He graduated from Howard Law School in Washington, D.C. He was a lifetime active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and in 1949 was elected president of the New York branch of the NAACP. He co-authored and edited several books, including Minorities USA and The Afro-American in United States History. He was a member of Noyac Golf Club in New York and Rolling Green Golf Course in Sarasota. Survivors include his wife, Elsa (Krueger); a son, Floyd of New York; a niece, Dr. Sherri of Houston; and a grandchild. Graveside services will be Saturday at Oakland Cemetery, Sag Harbor, where Yardley and Pino Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
