1940 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Jerry Harvey Matson Sr. Obituary
Matson, Sr., Jerry Harvey
June 12, 1940 - May 5, 2018
JERRY HARVEY MATSON, 77, entered the presence of the Lord on May 5, 2018. Jerry was born in Sarasota on June 12, 1940, the son of William R. and Rotha Harvey Matson. His mother was also a Sarasota native. His maternal grandparents were Jerry Wesley and Elsie Parramore Harvey. J. W. Harvey was the city's blacksmith and mayor of Sarasota County. Jerry had fond memories of his growing up years in Sarasota and the wonderful outdoor activities in which he participated. He talked of his days in Civil Air Patrol, Sailor Circus, and crewing Mr. Marantette's sailboat in the summer, besides countless opportunities to play baseball and softball. He graduated from Sarasota High School in 1958.
Jerry married his beloved high school sweetheart, Janet Mead Matson, 59 years ago, and was a wonderful husband to her. They had seven children, including one daughter who died as an infant. He leaves Janet, three daughters and three sons, as well as 23 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, a sister, Pamela VanAlstine, nieces, nephews and a cousin, Jerry W. Harvey. He was pre-deceased not only by his parents, but his brothers, William R. Matson Jr. and John A. Matson, and a grandson.
As Jerry matured, he realized his sinful heart was not fit to stand before God in judgment, so he set about being religious and trying to reform his ways. Finally, on his 26th birthday, June 12, 1966, he gave up trying to please God in his own strength and trusted in the Saviour Who had already paid the price for his redemption. A radical life change took place and he left his career as a junior officer at Sarasota Federal to take his family to South Carolina where he entered Bible College. After six years, he began full time service to the Lord, ministering in Richmond, Virginia for five years. In 1978 they moved to Norfolk, Virginia where he founded Fundamental Missions, an evangelistic ministry to international merchant seamen in which he was blessed beyond measure for over 45 years. He has also pastored the Harbour Light Baptist Church in Norfolk since 1989.
The memorial service for Jerry will be held Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the Altmeyer Funeral Home in Norfolk. Condolences may be left on their web site www.altmeyerfh.com
