John Jacobson Obituary

John H. Jacobson, 71, Sarasota, died Feb. 8, 2005. He was born Nov. 6, 1933, in Evanston, Ill., and came to Sarasota in 1999 from Holland, Mich., where he was president of Hope College for 12 years, retiring as president emeritus. He graduated with high honors from Swarthmore College in 1954 and received a degree in philosophy from Yale University when he was 23. He served as a faculty member and an administrator at Hamilton College in New York, Florida Presbyterian College (now Eckerd College) in St. Petersburg and Empire State College of the University of New York. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jeanne McKee; children Jean K. Pokrzywka, John E. and Jennie; a sister, Mary Cotton-Miller; a brother, Carl W.; and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Siesta Key Chapel. Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home, Sarasota, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Siesta Key Chapel, 4615 Gleason Ave., Sarasota, FL 34242; or to Doctors Without Borders, USA, P.O. Box 1856, Merrifield, VA 22116-8056.
