John McMahon Obituary

McMahon, John (Jack) III
August 17, 1933 - August 30, 2018
Jack was born in Buffalo, New York and passed away at age 85 in Sarasota, Florida. He graduated from Buffalo's Kensington High School in 1951 and from his beloved University of Notre Dame in 1955. He remained a loyal and rambunctious fan of the Fighting Irish until the end and was also a long-suffering Buffalo Bills fan, even after he moved to Florida in 1999. Jack served in the Army from 1956 to 1958, marrying his college sweetheart Carole (Harnist) McMahon in 1957. They recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary with a cruise to Alaska. Jack adored Carole, and they enjoyed a great life together. Jack worked his entire career at Sweet Home Schools in Amherst, New York, first as a social studies teacher and later as an administrator, also serving the entire time as the treasurer of the Sweet Home Federal Credit Union. Jack retired as Sweet Home's personnel director in 1989, but he continued as credit union treasurer until 1999. Jack was an active member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Longboat Key, Florida, steering the church's finance committee for nearly a decade and serving as treasurer of the men's club. He even "ran the bank" at the annual Ladies' Guild rummage sale, for which he received no end of grief from his daughters. Jack had a great sense of humor and enjoyed St. Patrick's Day more than was reasonable. Jack is survived by Carole and their four children, John McMahon (Pat), Kathleen Foresman (Mark), Karen McMahon (Ouida Crozier), and Sheila McMahon; his sister, Mary Klier (Thomas); and three grandchildren, Alicen Foresman, Daniel Foresman, and John (Jake) McMahon; and by many other friends and relatives, who will miss his sense of humor, his laugh, and even his gift of gab. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in Jack's name to two organizations that were very dear to him: St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and Longboat Library, both in Longboat Key, Florida. Friends and family members are invited to attend the memorial service scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 4280 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key, FL 34228.
