Dr. Joseph C. Moore (Joe) passed away peacefully on January 5, 2018 at his home in Bradenton, Florida. He was born on November 2, 1926 in Phillipe, West Virginia. He was the son of Marvin W. Moore and Mary Jane (Molly) Digman Moore. He graduated from Webster Springs High School in 1944 and volunteered to serve in the United States Navy that year. He was discharged in 1946 at the rank of Aviation Ordinanceman Third Class. He attended Wesleyan College in Buchannan, West Virginia and Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia before going on to graduate from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee in 1951. In April of 1949, he married Maxine Cline Moore and they moved to Bradenton in 1951. He opened his own Optometry practice in 1952 and was instrumental in organizing the first Manatee/Sarasota Optometry Association where he served as the first president of the group. Dr. Moore also donated his time to many other civic groups and clubs in the community. Dr. Moore always believed in treating all people equally and his practice offered the first non-segregated waiting room in the area. He is survived by his wife, Maxine, and his five children: Chuck and his wife, Sarah, Jim, Carol Niebanck and her husband, Hal, Mark and his wife, Catherine and Tom and his wife, Joan, twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Aside from his family, Joe's greatest passion was fishing the local waters. He had a great respect for the sea and local wildlife and took great pride in teaching the love of the sport to his children, grandchildren and many others. A memorial gathering will be held in his honor from 6-8PM Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel in Bradenton.
