Scalzo, Philip Donald
June 9, 1926 - June 2, 2009

Philip Donald "Don" Scalzo, 82, of Sarasota, formerly of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., died June 2, 2009.
Don will be interred at 2 p.m. Monday at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72. Family and friends will gather afterward at Mulligan's at the Bobby Jones Golf Club, 1000 Circus Blvd., Sarasota.
Survivors include children Jim of Hollywood, Paul and Tracey, both of Sarasota, and Cathy of Naselle, Wash.; three grandchildren; sister Shirley White of Sarasota; and brother Joseph of Louisiana.
Don served in the Merchant Marine through the close of World War II before starting a business and a family in the Croton area. Don moved to Sarasota in 1972, where he established himself as a building and remodeling contractor until his retirement.
An avid sailor, Don plied the waters of the Gulf of Mexico for more than three decades. He moved to Apollo Beach in 2002, returning to Sarasota this year to be closer to family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be offered to TideWell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238; or the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Don was a good, and honorable man, although he built many duplexes on the beach he sold us his personal duplex on Bradenton Beach, back in 1996. On the way back from the closing he confided in me that he was happy to sell it to Beach people because we know how it goes out there, and if it was to flood (which it did last fall) that we wouldn´t hold him to blame, which we didn´t, because that´s how it goes out here, and we are still here!

Lovely memories of a wonderful friend and sailing buddy. We won the Sarasota to Venice cup in 1977, sailing cat paws in light air in Don's 16 Ft Hobie Cat. Don was a gifted artist. I had several of his paintings for many years, and enjoyed them immensely. Tonight I thought of him and his wonderful son Paul. Sad to learn that Don died so long ago. I'll always have good memories of him and Paul. We had great fun in Sarasota. Don met my parents and a sister, whose wedding reception we attended together at my parents home in Gulfport.
