Richard P. Kost, 71, of Siesta Key, formerly of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., loving husband of Stephanie Sumner Kost passed away at home on March 25, 2012, with his family at his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the proud father of Robert (Lori) Kost and Stephen (Beth) Kost, and wonderful grandfather to Samantha, Zoe, and Charles Kost. Dick is survived by his brother, Norman Kost, and his sister-in-law, Mary McKay Sumner (Barry Thorpe).
Born in Detroit, Mich., he moved to Grosse Pointe Farms at an early age and attended school there, then going on to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he received his BBA and MBA degree with a concentration in Investment Management.
Upon graduation, he joined NBD Bank in the Investment Division and worked there for 35 years directing investment strategy and economic research. He was instrumental in creating and managing the bank's international equity fund. He retired in 1999 from the bank which is now J.P. Morgan Chase. Dick was a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a past president of the Investment Analyst Society of Detroit.
Dick was an avid golfer and was very happy in his retirement pursing investment management and a quest for life-long learning. Dick was active in The Longview Society, Prismatic Club of Detroit, and Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and a member of The Field Club.
A Mass celebrating Dick's life will be held on Friday, March 30, at St. Michael the Archangel on Siesta Key, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the Kost family asks that gifts in Dick's name be made to the Suncoast Communities Blood Bank, 1760 Mound Street, Sarasota, FL 34236.

Dick Kost was my first real boss in my first real job. It was 1969 and I worked for him at NBD in the Trust Department. When I married, he and his wife gave me a lovely sterling silver serving spoon which I still use! An internet search led me here, and I am so sorry not to have been able to tell him that he was a quiet, strong person in my life which I truly appreciated but was too young to realize at the time. I've not forgotten him, all these years.

I have known Dick Kost through The Longview Society for a number of years and found him to be the most erudite and thoughtful members of that group. He could give precise dissertations on a host of subjects usually in the field of the economy and business.
In additiion he was a wonderful friend and I shall miss his smile and kind words.
Dick, it just won't be the same without you.
