Sanford Milter, 93, of Sarasota, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio and Boca Raton, Florida, died on April 7 at the Anchin Pavilion. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, April 11 at 2:00 pm, in the Toale Brothers Funeral Home at 40 N. Orange Avenue, Sarasota.
Born in Odessa, Russia to the late Manya and Isaak Milter, he came to Cleveland in 1924. He attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where he was a member of Phi Epsilon Pi Fraternity. He served in the US Army in the Pacific from 1942 - 1945 as a drill sergeant. Upon his discharge from the Army, he joined his father in the family dry goods business. In 1948 he joined American Furniture Sales Co. (future Color Mail Inc) in the direct mail business and remained there until his retirement in 1974.
He married Ronnie Hersh in 1940 and they made their home in Cleveland and later in Boca Raton. After her death in 1985, he married the former Sylvia Weisblat Epstein Barnett and they made their home in Sarasota. Following her death in 1997 Helen Sherman became his long-time companion to the present.
While living in Sarasota he became involved in many organizations in the community including American Cancer Society Man-to-Man Prostate Support Group, American Jewish Community, American Society for Technion Israel Institute of Technology (Gala Honoree 1999), Art Center Sarasota, Florida Holocaust Museum, Jewish Housing Council, Jewish National Fund, Jewish Family and Children's Service (Gala Honoree 2007), Museum of Asian Art, Sarasota Manatee Synagogue Council, Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Federation, and Temple Beth Israel (President 1994-95).
He is survived by long-time companion Helen Sherman, 5 children: Susi Rothenberg of Boca Raton, FL; Steve Milter of Hanalei, HI; Barbara Milter of Cleveland, OH; Bruce (Amy) Epstein of St. Petersburg, FL; Ellen Yasmer of Tucson, AZ; and brother Burton (Carolyn) Milter of Cleveland, OH. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Sanford is preceded in death by his sister Shirley Green, who passed away in March 2011.
