A.G. "Tony" Fernandez Obituary
Fernandez, A.G. "Tony"
Aug. 21, 1921 - May 12, 2012
A.G. "Tony" Fernandez, founding member of Sarasota Broadcasting Company and WKXY radio passed in his sleep Saturday (May 12, 2012) at the age of 90. It was Tony's dream to own a radio station after serving in WWII (a Lieutenant and member of 134th AAA Gun Battalion (mobile) deployed to Europe defending England against Germany's Buzz Bombs and aircraft bombardments). The knowledge he received from his degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and his WWII command of a radar battery for his artillery unit gave him the edge to start Sarasota's second radio station. He owned and operated the station for 50 years until finally selling the station in 1999. When Tony arrived in Sarasota after the war with his bride, Rose, he quickly became one of the core community leaders that help shape the Sarasota we know today. His philosophy of using his radio station for community affairs and local news dissemination led to his emersion into the city (and county) we know today. He served as PTA President for Tuttle Elementary and Sarasota Junior High School. He was an active Rotarian and was President of the Downtown Sarasota Rotary Club in 1968. He was involved in the construction of Concordia Lutheran Church where he was a member. Community boards of non-profit organizations used his organizational skills. He was the past chairman of the YMCA building committee and past District Chairman of the Sunny Land (Boy Scouts) Council where he was awarded the Live Oak Award, the highest distinction a district can give for long and outstanding service. Tony was a proponent of the agriculture industry in Sarasota County and served on the Sarasota County Agricultural Fair Association Board until his death. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Rose. Sons Charles Fernandez and Tony Fernandez, both of Sarasota. Daughters Daryl Flynn and Sheila Roberts, both of Orlando. Grandchildren Kimberly Hoyle (Houston, TX), Jennifer Berndsen (Fairfax, VA), Christopher Fernandez (Sarasota), James Flynn (Orlando), Mathew Roberts (Orlando), Laura Roberts (Orlando), Casey Fernandez (Sarasota) and Great-Grandchild Nadine Hoyle (Houston, TX). Visitation: Thursday, May 17, 2012 - 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Service: Friday, May 18, 2012 - 8:30 AM - Toale Brothers, 40 North Orange Avenue, Sarasota. Burial: Friday, May 18, 2012 - 10:30 AM - Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72 Sarasota. Tony Fernandez was a great husband, father, grandfather, broadcaster, businessman and Sarasota pioneer.
