Donald Roger Anderson sailed peacefully into eternity on June 11, 2012
Don was born June 29, 1937, in Little Falls, Minnesota, to Austin and Esther (Jorgensen) Anderson. He was raised in Mora and Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his brothers, Dennis and Austin, Jr., and his sisters, Joan Jackson and Marcia Emerson.
Don served his country in the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army from 1954 through 1959. After his honorable release from active duty, he worked as a sales representative for Phillip Morris, American Safety Razor, Norcliff Thayer and SmithKline Beecham.
Don married Noreen Ellen Knox on March 1, 1962. They raised their three children, Kristen, Marc and Jina in Minneapolis. Don loved the outdoors. He enjoyed camping, fishing, canoeing and boating, but above all he was an avid sailor. Summers were spent sailing the waters of Lake Superior and visiting Don's favorite ports of Grand Marais, Minnesota, and Bayfield, Wisconsin as well as Isle Royale and the Keeweenaw Peninsula. Don and Marc and a crew of friends sailed in the 1985 Trans-Superior Race from Sault St. Marie, Michigan, to Duluth, Minnesota.
Don and Noreen moved to Venice, Florida in 1994. Don quickly made many new friends through his handyman business and at Venice Church of Christ and South Trail Church of Christ. He was able to enjoy many new sailing adventures that included two sailings to Cuba, international sailing races off Greece, Italy and around Sicily and passages throughout the Gulf of Mexico, especially through the 10,000 Islands and Everglades area, down the Keys to Key West and the Dry Tortugas. He anchored at Fort Jefferson numerous times with his two older grandsons, Alex and Nick, and other friends.
Don's wife, Noreen, children, Kristen, Marc and Jina, and grandchildren Alexander, Nicholas, Kaitlin, Matthew, Tyler, Molly, Bodie and Libby are thankful for the time they shared with him and for the love, support, prayers and friendship shown by so many as Don's condition worsened. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
A visitation is scheduled for June 17th from 3-5 p.m. at Farley Funeral Home in Venice with a prayer service beginning at 4:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10:15 a.m. on Mon. June 18, 2012 at the South Trail Church of Christ in Sarasota followed by a chapel service at Sarasota National Cemetery at noon.
Don requested memorials to South Trail Church of Christ, Venice Church of Christ or Tidewell Hospice in lieu of flowers.
