Hess, John Knox
Jan. 6, 1919 - Jun. 12, 2012
Rev. John Knox Hess died at age 93 on June 12th, 2012 at his home in Sarasota with his wife Ruth and daughter Cathy by his side.
John was born January 6th, 1919 in Girard Ohio to Rev. Charles Bentley Hess and Zulu Eloise Knox Hess. He was the younger of two children and he grew up under the watchful eye of his adoring sister, Anna Catherine, who was 10 years his senior. He attended the College of Wooster in Ohio and then seminary at Boston University in preparation for a career following his father's footsteps as a minister in the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served as Associate Pastor at Epworth-Euclid Church in Cleveland, then as Senior Pastor at Garfield Memorial in Pepper Pike,Grace Church in Coshocton, First Church in Poland, and First Church in Akron. He also served as District Superintendent of the Mount Vernon District. Before retiring, John and Ruth traveled throughout the country assisting local churches with fundraising campaigns through the Office of Finance and Field Service of the United Methodist Church. Ruth and John moved to Sarasota in 1981 and became members of the Sarasota First United Methodist Church. They have lived at Plymouth Harbor retirement community in Sarasota since 1994.
John and Ruth Miller met on the dock at Lakeside, Ohio, during the summer of 1943, fell in love, and were married on Christmas Day of the same year. Through 69 years of marriage they have rarely been apart from one another. Their 6 children and spouses, 17 grandchildren and spouses, and 18 great grandchildren have been central to their lives, and they delighted in strengthening the bonds of their extended family through reunions and constant loving support. John and Ruth enjoyed camping with their children in a converted school bus, especially at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and sailing on Lake Erie from their cottage home in Lakeside, Ohio.
John was a people person. He was a natural organizer and administrator, always busy with projects great and small. Both profound and light-hearted, he radiated a love of life through a warm sense of humor. He enjoyed the good things in life but was also concerned for those in need. He found the violence in the world troubling and tried to vision the path to a future without war. His hopes for a better world were sustained by a deep sense of God as Love.
Preceded in death by his parents, sister Anna Catherine Hess, son Craig John Hess, and son-in-law James Norman, John is survived by his loving and devoted wife Ruth Miller Hess. He will be deeply missed by many, especially by his children and their spouses: Carol (Fenn) Pierce of Coshocton, Ohio; Cathy Norman of Sarasota, Florida; Cinda (John) Foulkrod of Bradenton, Florida; Charles (Sue) Hess of Sarasota, Florida; Janet (Jeff Herbert) Hess-Herbert of Helena, Montana; and Claire (Paul) Tinkerhess of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Grandpa John will be fondly carried in the memories of his grandchildren: Hallie (Monty) Montague, Kara Pierce, Jordan Pierce, Lisa (Butch) Klemeyer, Scott (Wendy) Norman, Josh (Jenny) Norman, Jay (Tonya) Foulkrod, Jeff (LeAnn) Foulkrod, Kevin (Marianna) Foulkrod, Kyle (Amanda) Foulkrod, John Hess,Tom Hess, Kaly Hess, Ariann Hess, Miller Tinkerhess, Martin Tinkerhess, and Eric Tinkerhess.
