Keyes, Samuel S.

Samuel S. Keyes of Longboat Key and Cape Coral passed away on July 4, 2012 at the age of 88 years old. He was born in Winchester, MA and moved to Longboat Key from Hartford, CT in 1986. He was Vice President of Aetna Life & Casualty and retired in 1986 after 38 years of service including assignments in Cleveland, OH, and Detroit, MI.
As a teenager, Sam enlisted in the Army in 1942 as a private and was discharged as a Captain, the highest rank achievable by a noncommissioned officer. Among his many achievements in the military, he participated in D-day and landed on Red Beach on Omaha Beach in the early morning of D-day June 6, 1944. A book, "Until I Write Again, Love, Sam" based on his letters to home during his service in WWII will soon be published.
Sam graduated from Boston University in 1948 where he met and married Virginia, the love of his life. They were married for 62 years before she died in January, 2010.
In retirement has was active in sailing and power boating and a member of Bird Key Yacht Club. He enjoyed the company of his many friends from Sarasota and Longboat Key and particularly longtime friends who moved to the Sarasota area from Pepper Pike, OH.
Sam is survived by his sons, Stephan S. of Atlanta, a granddaughter, Katharine Keyes of Atlanta and Geoffrey P. of Cape Coral, FL; a sister Frances Yeager of San Bernardino; a brother W. Prescott of Winchester, MA.
