Esworthy, Walter Hibbard
Aug. 11, 1918 - July 25, 2012
Walter was born in Collingswood, NJ. He graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD in December of 1941, 19 days after Pearl Harbor in the accelerated wartime Class of 1942. He attended Submarine School in Groton, CT and spent his naval career with the submarine navy, culminating with a teaching assignment at the Argentine Naval War College in Buenos Aires from 1959 to 1962. After retiring from the Navy Walter and wife, Ann moved to Laurel to take charge of Alemquer, their daughter and son-in-law's inherited estate, and provided a home base for the entire far flung family. For the last 42 years, Walter and Ann have been involved with a variety of community activities, including Hospice, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, and the Laurel Civic Association. Alemquer became a horticultural gem under Walter and Ann's care. They opened their gates for annual Azalea Walks enjoyed by hundreds of their friends. He was an active member of The Bath Club. Walter died at home just before noon on Wednesday, July 27, 2012 with his beloved Ann holding his hand. He was 2 weeks shy of his 94th birthday. Daughter Gigi, son-in-law Ken and daughter-in-law Susann Felton were at his side. He is further survived by son Alan, daughter-in-law Nellaine, grandchildren, Ken IV (Pat) and Ann and granddaughter Alexis. There will be no services.
