Alice Cloud Cooke, 97, of Sarasota, FL slipped peacefully into the arms of her Lord on December 25, 2012. She was the wife of the late Carl F. Cooke, to whom she had been married for 61 years before his death in 2000. Born in St. Petersburg Florida, she was the daughter of Alfred Bruce Cloud and Ethel Stevens Cloud. She was preceded in death by her two brothers. She was a 1932 graduate of St. Petersburg High and the Washington (D.C.) School for Secretaries. She held several secretarial jobs during her lifetime, including for the Florida Military Academy, the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, and the Philadelphia National Bank. She lived most of her adult years in Pennsylvania and New Jersey before her husband retired and they moved to North Carolina in 1973 and later to Sarasota. Alice was a life-long learner who not only was an avid reader herself but instilled a love of reading into her children and grandchildren. For a time she was a volunteer for Literacy Volunteers of America. She loved crafts and was an accomplished seamstress who provided the products of her many classes in sewing, decoupage, fabric painting, and ceramics to family members who continue to treasure them. She had a keen sense of humor. She also was a student of the Bible who enjoyed both taking and teaching classes, including teaching one when she was in her late 80's. She was well known for being willing to share her Christian faith and her strong moral values and opinions, especially with those for whom she cared deeply. She is survived by her two children: Thomas L. Cooke of Sarasota and Judith C. Hoffman (and husband Cris) of Clayton, NC. In addition, she and Carl were blessed with four grandchildren: Laura C. Meyer (and husband Mike) of Sarasota; Carl W. Cooke (and wife Leigh-Christi) of Charlotte, NC; Cindy Hoffman Wiener (and husband Rob) of Raleigh, N.C.; and Cheryl L. Hoffman of Washington, D.C. Their legacy also includes nine great-grandchildren: Audrey, Sarah, and Michael Meyer; Danielle, Matthew, and Lauren Wiener; and Smith, Covington, and Davis Cooke. She was also blessed to have Trudy Anschuetz Cooke as daughter-in-law and friend in her life. The family deeply appreciates all the love and care given by Debi Poinsett for the past nine years.
