(Robert) Wade Collier, 91, of Sarasota, FL, formerly of Memphis, TN, died on Feb. 21, 2013. Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sat., at 1st Congregational Church UCC in Sarasota, FL. Funeral arrangements by: Body Donated to Medical Edu & Research Inst..
Wade lived to be 91 years old, but suffered from congestive heart disease since the year 2000 and died of it. He graduated from N.C. State University with a degree in Chemistry, and enlisted in the Air Corps as a Lieutenant, later promoted to Captain. He served in different locations for four years, during WWII, in the program supplying oxygen to pilots. He never fired a shot!
After the war, he worked as a chemist at Southern Research Institute, in Birmingham, AL. He and his wife Fran married there and later, went to Georgia Tech, on the G.I. Bill for his Master's degree. After graduation, the family, which now included two children, moved to Memphis, TN. Wade worked at Buckeye Cellulose Corp, a subsidiary of Proctor & Gamble for 30 years.
He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ from 1994, when they moved to Sarasota, until the year 2000, when his heart problems began.
Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Fran; his son Charles Wade Collier, daughter-in-law Irina & grandson Cooper Wade Collier; his daughter Martha Eleanor Collier & Son-in-law Carter Garber; Niece Carol Barker; Nephew, Charles Jones III, Wife Jennifer; Nephew Rusty Jones, Wife Diane; God daughter, Pamela Bryan. Predeceasing him are his sister Eleanor & her husband Woodie; brother-in-law Charles Jones Jr.
