Judith Louise Lechner, 74, of Sarasota, FL passed away on April 27, 2013. Judy was born on May 22, 1938 in Spring Valley, IL. After living in Illinois and Michigan, she became a full-time resident of Sarasota in 1981. Judy was pre-deceased by her parents, Arthur and Mary (Gerace) Bump. She is survived by David, her loving husband of 57 years; daughter Mary Ellis of Sarasota, FL; cherished granddaughter Kristin Ellis of Washington, D.C.; brothers James (Susan) Bump of Umatilla, FL and Dominic (Shirley) Bump of La Salle, IL; sister-in-law Dian (William) Taylor of Winnetka, IL; and, many dear family members and friends.
A deeply devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Judy truly cherished spending time with her family and friends. Her family was most fortunate to have such a selfless, caring, affectionate, strong and principled person in their lives. Friends admired Judy's thoughtful words and ways, her warm and welcoming smile, and cheerful disposition. Judy earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Art from Western Michigan University, and taught junior high school in Michigan. Her volunteer activities included assisting disabled veterans at Hines Hospital and leading Girl Scouts. An avid traveler, reader and golfer, Judy also enjoyed bridge and bunco, cooking and entertaining.
Judy died from a very rare cancer, merkel cell carcinoma. For nearly two years, she faced adversity with a positive attitude, courage and grace. Judy and her family greatly appreciate the kindness and efforts of the medical community, and are most grateful for the outpouring of love and support. The numerous offers of help, visits, phone calls, cards, e-mails and beautiful flowers and gifts were most meaningful to Judy, bringing joy to difficult days.
Judy will be giving her body to medical education and research. Services will be held on May 5, 2013 at Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home and Crematory (7454 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota). A viewing will be offered from 3:30 pm to 4:00 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life at 4:00 pm. Afterwards, a gathering to remember Judy will be held at 5 pm at Serenoa Country Club, Sarasota. The family requests that donations in Judy's honor be made to Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota (5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238).
