Richard T. Upton, 82, of Sarasota, FL, died on Oct. 18, 2013. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 10:30 am on Wed., Oct. 23, 2013 at Holmes Funeral Home in Manchester, CT. Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wed., at East Cemetery in Manchester, CT. Funeral arrangements by: Holmes Funeral Home, Manchester, CT.
Richard T. Upton, 82, of Sarasota, Florida was born May 27, 1931, a native of Hartford, Connecticut and a Professor at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, died peacefully, Friday October 18, 2013 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He is the Son of the late Ray Granville and Helen Marie (Colla) Upton and was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during the Korean War.
Richard is survived by his Son, Richard T. Upton, II, Brother, Robert Upton, Sisters, Joanie Upton and Constance Green, Nephews and Nieces, Bobby Upton, Michael Upton, Cheryl Upton, Kimberly Upton, Maureen Moriarty, Colleen Moriarty, Jodi Green, Vicky Piasecki and Kelly Green. He is survived and truly missed by Loving Friends and Caregivers, Jean Fahey, Patti Moore, Don Smith, Natasha Bryant, Gracie Deneus and Catherine Johnson.
In addition to being a devoted teacher, Richard developed his own "voice" as a painter while attending the Provincetown Workshop. He found the light and air of Cape Cod to be spectacular, precipitating one of the most terrific times in his life. Provincetown was followed by a Fulbright Fellowship and an international environment in which to paint. Ultimately Cortona, Italy became the source of his life's artistic work, where he found his place in the landscape.
Richard's paintings are included in such prestigious private and public collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., the Library of Congress, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
