Carolyn Brooks, 74, of Sarasota, died at the Tidewell Hospice at Lakewood Ranch on December 21, 2013, following a long illness. Her beloved husband and daughter were at her bedside. The daughter of the late Albert C. Schauman and Mary Miller Schauman, Carolyn was born in Washington, D.C., and resided in Baltimore and Potomac, Md., before retiring to Sarasota in 2002.
Carolyn is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Charles W. Brooks, Jr.; sons C. David (Elizabeth) of Nashville, TN.; Bruce W. (Yvette) of San Diego, CA; and daughter M. Allyson Young (Carl) of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren: Samantha F. Brooks of Columbus, OH; Michael C. Brooks of Winston-Salem, N.C.; Rachel Brooks of San Diego; Christopher C. Brooks of San Diego; Hannah B. Young of Raleigh, and Camden B. Young of Raleigh.
Carolyn was a skilled contract bridge player, achieving the coveted Life Master designation and taught the game for many years. She was also an enthusiastic 9 hole golfer at Stoneybrook Golf & Country Club, as well as a lifelong fan of "her" Baltimore Orioles. After the children were educated, Carolyn worked as an insurance administrator in Baltimore, and as clinical support in a Bethesda, Md. physician's office.
Upon returning to Baltimore in 1995, she served as a volunteer for several years at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. After retirement, Carolyn and Charlie went north to spend summers in their favorite little "sand castle" in Bethany Beach, DE.
Carolyn was loved by all who knew her; her beautiful smile embraced everyone, and she had a kind and generous spirit. Throughout her life, she fulfilled in outstanding fashion her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, and mother-in- law. Her love and devotion to her family was an inspiration to all.
