Jean Gash Probinsky, 87, of Sarasota, FL., formerly of Miami, FL died Feb. 20, 2014. Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Sun. at Palms-Robarts Memorial Park.
Jean was born May 6, 1926 in Boston, MA to Abraham Gash and Dorothy Belson, one of four siblings.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, David Probinsky, and her son, Mark Probinsky; and she is survived by her children, April Grossman (Walter Lee Shepherd) and Brent Probinsky (Susan); daughter-in-law, Norsia Probinsky; and grandchildren, Katherine Grossman, David Probinsky, Ariana Probinsky, and Mia Probinsky.
Jean graduated from Roxbury High School in MA and was voted "Most Mischievous," and from Boston University in 1947 with a degree in Physical Education and Rehabilitation.
Jean married David Probinsky of Wildwood, NJ in 1949 and they moved to Miami, FL in 1953.
Jean taught middle school in Miami for 20 years, and earned her Master's Degree in Education from Appalachian State University and a Doctorate of Education from Virginia Tech. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Jean loved teaching kids and was a role model for them. She was especially dedicated to helping Mexican migrant children and African American children in Miami and Homestead in the 1960's and 70's.
Jean traveled widely, including living on a Kibbutz in Israel, worked as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras, was a photographer, and rode a bicycle across the United States for world hunger at age 61. Her professional interest was Humanistic Psychology.
Jean was a true adventurer and loved life and it's challenges. She followed the beat of her own drum and loved her friends and family dearly, especially those at Kobernick in Sarasota, where she happily lived the last four years.
A special thanks to Dr. Ross Morrison, Dr. Stephen Culp, caregivers at SMH, her aides Elena, Maydelin, Madeline, and Ethel, and to all the wonderful folks at Kobernick-Anchin.
A Memorial Service will be scheduled in at few weeks at Kobernick-Anchin in Sarasota.
