Mertz, W Richard
May 31, 1927 - April 11, 2014
Dick Mertz was born in Pittsburgh where he graduated from Pittsburgh public schools before going to Kings Point Academy where he graduated in 1946. He spent 2 years in the Merchant Marine ferrying troops after WW2. He then returned to graduate from Lehigh University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked as a project engineer, building pelletizing plants in several countries before he retired in the late 1980s.
After retirement, Dick traveled widely. He loved his summer home in Chautauqua Institution in Western New York where he spent most of every summer with the family for 30 years. He also loved his Airstream Wally Byam club with which he traveled for 20 years and served as treasurer of the local club. He was always ready to do something new, especially if it was fun.
Dick is survived by Mary Lu, his wife of 64 years, and children Richard, Lisa, Tom, Carrie Ross, Sue, and Bill. He also leaves two beloved granddaughters, Cristine Traber (Gabe) and Emily Ross.
A service of celebration and thanks for Dick's life will be held at Bay Village at 11 on Saturday, May 24. A lunch will follow. The family requests no flowers. Please send any memorial contributions to St. Andrew United Church of Christ, Bay Village, or Tidewell Hospice.
