John P. Cavallero, Jr., (Jack) former Executive Director of the New Haven Parking Authority passed away peacefully on July 17, 2014, in Sarasota, FL. He was predeceased by his wife Louise (Marcarelli) Cavallero. Born in New Haven on April 16, 1930, to the late John and Marie (Passarella) Cavallero, he graduated from West Haven High School and was a graduate of Quinnipiac University. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1949 to 1952, earning five Battle Stars including the Chosin Reservoir Battle. Jack was a proud member of the Marine Corps League, the American Legion and the Chosin Few. In 1956, he joined the City of New Haven Traffic & Parking Department. He became Deputy Director in 1960. In 1964, he was appointed Chief Deputy Commissioner for the City of Baltimore Department of Transit & Traffic. In 1966, he was appointed Director of Traffic & Parking for the City of New Haven. He held that post as well as Executive Director of the New Haven Parking Authority for 32 years. During his tenure, he was named Traffic Engineer of the Year and received the Transportation Engineer Award from the New England Section of The International Institute of Transportation Engineers. He is survived by his daughters Nancy McNamara, Joni Arison (Alan), son John Cavallero, III, grandsons Ryan and Gavin Arison, granddaughter Olivia Cavallero, and niece Kathy Mulligan. He was predeceased by his sister Barbara Yoho. A Mass in his memory will be held in Newtown, CT at St. Rose Church at 10 am on August 9, 2014. He and Louise will be interred with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in Jack's name to woundedwarriorsproject.org
