Mrs. Lydia I. DeRose, 93, passed away on July 20, 2014 in Lakeland, Florida, following a two-year bout with Alzheimer's disease. Lydia was born in Watervliet, Michigan in 1920. She served in the U. S. Coast Guard for two and a half years during World War II and later married Bernard A. DeRose, her husband of sixty two and a half years, who preceded her in death in 2007.

Mrs. DeRose was employed in several administrative support capacities throughout her life, most notably by the Macomb (Michigan) Intermediate School District, from which she retired in 1979 when she and Bernard moved to Sarasota, Florida. In retirement, Mrs. DeRose served on the Village Green HOA Council and was a member of the Church of the Palms in Sarasota.

Lydia is survived by her children, David DeRose (Susan) of Lakeland, Florida and Diane Roberts of Mt. Clemens, Michigan; two grandchildren, Derek DeRose of Hendersonville, Tennessee and Dana DeRose-Geary (Adam) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; one great-grandson, Noah Geary of Rock Hill, South Carolina, as well as one sister, Genevieve; and three brothers, Jerome, Harry and Jack.

Private cremation will be performed by Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home in Lakeland, Florida. In lieu of flowers, Lydia urged those wishing to commemorate her life to contribute to their local non-profit food bank or hospice organization.
