Doris Bolton Peter Obituary
Peter, Doris Bolton
Sept. 29, 2009

Doris Bolton Peter died at 92 years of age on Sept. 29, 2009, in her home on Sarasota Bay.
She was born in Cleveland Dec. 18, 1916, to Nellie Brook Bolton and Thomas Bennett Bolton. After graduating from Lakewood High School, she received a degree in art and design, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Michigan and then returned to Cleveland, where she married Wilbur Howard Peter Jr. She was a prolific artist, owned and managed a design business, Doris Peter Interiors in Cleveland, and was a member of the American Institute of Design. An avid sailor, she was a founding member of the Cleveland Yacht Club's Wet Hens, a women's competitive sailing organization.
Her parents had retired to Sarasota in 1949 and, in 1967, she and her husband, Bill, followed them to what they believed to be an artist's paradise. Though suffering from multiple sclerosis since her early thirties, Dori loved life in Sarasota. She served on the board of the New College Library Association, was a founder of the Mistletoe Ball, was a docent at the Ringling Museum and a board member of Ringling College of Art and Design Library Association. She continued painting and especially enjoyed doing pastels of the sky, earth and water below while flying in a friend's plane. She designed five family homes in Sarasota.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Wilbur and Janis Peter of Knoxville, Carolyn and Bob Johnson and Thomas and Marjorie Peter of Sarasota. Additional survivors include seven grandsons and wives, Harold Johnson and Krista Toomre of Sarasota, William and Christine Johnson of Sarasota, Maxwell and Amy Peter of Saratoga Springs, William and Whitney Peter of Knoxville, David and Shelly Peter of Atlanta, William and Kersti Peter of California, David Peter of Sarasota; and nine great-grandchildren.
A private memorial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Doris and Bill Peter Scholarship at the Ringling College of Art and Design,
Office of Development, 2700 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34234.
