Obituary Condolences

Roche, Thomas Eugene
Jan. 13, 2012

Thomas Eugene Roche was born on Feb. 7, 1917, in New York City. He was the only child of Thomas A. Roche and Irene Louise Mulford Roche.
Tom spent his childhood years in Manhattan's Upper West side, later moving to Cleveland, Ohio. He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he played football and was a golden gloves boxer. He graduated Magna cum Laude in 1939 with a degree in Philosophy. Tom then attended Catholic University, leaving to join the
Army Corps of Engineers at the onset of WWII, qualifying him as a member of America's "Greatest Generation". Tom was a true Irishman of great wit and intellect.
During WWII, he served as a Captain in the Army in Africa, France and Belgium and fought in the Utah Beach invasion of Normandy. After the war, he returned to Cleveland, where he met the love of his life, Mary Virginia "Ginny" Monroe, his wife of 64 years. They were married in the Log Chapel at the University of Notre Dame.
Tom earned a Master's Degree from New York University during his early working years - he spent his entire career at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Ohio and later NYC. After living in Ohio and New Jersey, he and Virginia retired to Florida. Tom and Virginia raised their six children with love, kindness and understanding. Virginia passed from this life on Dec. 12, 2011 - now Tom has reunited with his soul-mate in heaven to forever share in God's glory. He is survived by his six children, 14 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Tom is so loved, and sadly missed.
Services will be held at the Epiphany Cathedral, 350 Tampa Ave West, Venice, FL at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 20.
