Nathaniel Heard, 94, of Sarasota, formerly of Massachusetts and Houston, Texas, died Feb. 6, 2012 in Sarasota, Fla. surrounded by family.
Heard was born on Oct. 1, 1917 in Brookline, Mass. to Joseph J. and Margaret B. Heard of Waban, Mass. He graduated from Newton High School, a classmate of Mike Wallace of CBS "60 Minutes," and later studied government in Harvard's class of 1940, a classmate of President John F. Kennedy. He was married to Barbara Ross of Wareham, Mass., and in 1970 married the late Martha Davenport of Marion, Mass.
Heard is survived by sons John Reed Heard of Valle Crucis, N.C. and Ross Heard of League City, Texas; grandsons Jonathan Heard of Blowing Rock, N.C. and Justin Heard, also of League City, Texas; granddaughter Hilary Heard of New York, N.Y.; and great-grandson Evan Nathaniel Heard of League City, Texas. Survivors also include step-daughter Judith Stewart and her children Gordon Stewart IV, Charlotte and Elizabeth Stewart, all of New York, N.Y.
He is also survived by sister Lucy Porter of Merced, Calif.; brother Robert Heard of Easton, Pa.; and sister Rhoda Perry of Mitchellville, Md. Preceding him in death were siblings Mary Moerchell of Eugene, Ore., John J. Heard of Wickford, R.I., and David B. Heard of Wareham, Mass.; and Nathaniel's son Donald Heard, of Houston, Texas and Marion, Mass.
Heard served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1940-41, and later was an engineer with Kinney Vacuum Pump Company in Cambridge, Mass. An accomplished and dedicated athlete, he was a major donor to the Harvard Athletic Track Fund and he established the Nathaniel Heard Scholarship Fund at Harvard College. He was active in the Sarasota Fruit & Nut Society, and the local MENSA chapter. Lee-En Chung, Sarasota resident and long time friend said, "Nat was an enthusiastic and longtime member of the Manasota Track Club, participating regularly in Senior Olympic activities."
