Molleen J. Pust, 98, died on March 16, 2013. Born in New York, New York to William and Mary Pust, she moved to Sarasota in 1973 following her retirement from the US Department of Labor. As personnel manager, her thirty year career included positions in New York, Germany, Okinawa and Washington, DC. Working with Brother William Geenen, she helped in the development of the groundbreaking program for older adults, known as Senior Friendship Centers. Affectionately known as "the first volunteer", she went on to serve as the Senior Friendship Center's Assistant Director for Planning and Development. Her organizational and business skills assisted with the expansion of Senior Friendship Centers to five counties on the West Coast of Florida, inspiring volunteers to share the philosophy of "People Helping People." Molleen continued to volunteer into her ninety's, working on the center's historical archives. In 1997 she was awarded the Unsung Hero by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. In 1980 she was recognized by the City of Sarasota for meritorious service to the community and in 2007 she was the recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Service Award, a national award that recognizes individuals who have given at least 4,000 hours in public service over the course of their lives.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Martha's Catholic Church at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, April 3rd.
