James R. Greer of Longboat Key, FL passed away on April 19, 2013 at the age of 89. He was born in Sioux City, IA and has been a resident of Longboat Key since moving from Orchard Park, NY in 1983. He was the General Agent for Aetna Life & Casualty and retired in 1983 after 33 years of service which included assignments in Des Moines, IA; Toledo, OH and culminated in Buffalo, NY for the last 24 years of his career.
As a freshman in college at the University of Iowa, Jim enlisted in the Army as a private in 1942, and served in combat action as a member of the 66th and 42nd infantry divisions in France and Germany. His final assignment in Europe was to guard German Prisoners of War. In recognition for the dignity he showed to those in his care, a German soldier drew a caricature of Jim, which all the prisoners signed. That caricature was one of his most treasured items. He was awarded a bronze star for his service.
Jim graduated from the University of Iowa in 1947, where he met and married Miriam L. Leighton in 1948. Together they had 9 children and were married for 37 years before her passing in May of 1985.
Jim married Suzanne Sullivan in 1986 and they made their home in Longboat Key, FL. In retirement, Jim served as President of the Men's Golf Committee at The Longboat Key Club, was chairman of the Scholarship Committee at Cardinal Mooney High School, played an active role as a citizen for the continued development of Longboat Key. Together with Sue, they served voluntary roles in the community of Longboat Key and St. Mary's Star of the Sea Parish.
Jim is survived by his wife Sue, children John L. (Rhonda) of Falls Church, VA; Thomas M. (Robin) of Bradenton, FL; Margaret A. Creamer (Timothy) of Manlius, NY; Daniel J. of Orchard Park, NY; Joseph R. (Courtney) of Annapolis, MD; Mary E. Greer (Andy Shaw) of Iowa City, IA; Constance E. of North Tonawanda, NY; and Molly L. Brady (Jay) of Valrico, FL. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 26 nieces and nephews and countless friends and associates. He is predeceased by his son James P. and his four brothers and two sisters.
The family will be present on Tuesday, April 23rd from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, 40 N. Orange Avenue, Sarasota, FL. A Mass will be offered at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, April 24th at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, 4280 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key, FL.
