Born August 8, 1931 in Glen Burnie, MD died after an unexpected illness on July 23, 2013. Only child of Elmer G. Sauer and Therese Gerda Stickfort, beloved husband (50 years in November 2013) to Dolores "Dee" Sauer; father of G. Michael Bryner (wife Asita) of Weston, Matthew E. Sauer (wife Nicole) of Palmetto and predeceased daughter Cheryl Bryner of Harless. Grandfather of Caden Grant Bryner, Dominic Nolan Bryner and Conner James Elmer Sauer.
Elmer served in the 3rd Infantry Battallion, presidential honor guard, Ft. Myer, VA. He received his bachelor's degree in Soil Science and Agriculture from the University of Maryland in 1957. Elmer began his career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Baltimore, MD; promoted to District and Area Conservationist in Maryland, Area Conservationist in Morristown, N.J. and was honored as Chairman of the Schiff Land Use Conservation Committee of the Boy Scouts of America in Sussex, N.J. in 1975. He then transferred to Florida as Area Conservationist in Palmetto until his retirement in 1994 after 39 years.
Elmer and his wife created their personal scholarship program called PROMISE and contributed more than 15 scholarships to graduates from Palmetto High, encouraging further education in Florida colleges and universities, also established several four-year scholarships to Take Stock in Children. He was a guardian ad litem for several years in Bradenton and a mentor to children and caregivers going through the court process.
Elmer loved his family and friends, lived well, laughed often, traveled extensively, and enjoyed his home and garden, fishing, golf, bowling, and sports events. He was a gentle, but firm man, a Christian who tried to live those principles, leaving this world a better place. Memorials may be made in his name to The Therese Gerda Sauer Scholarship Fund State College of Florida, Take Stock in Children, The Humane Society of Manatee County, Tidewell Hospice, or Meals on Wheels. His passing is a great loss to those who knew him. National Cremation and Burial Society will handle arrangements. No services planned at this time.
