Marlow, Grace
Douglass
Nov. 22, 1922 - Aug. 12, 2013
Grace Douglass Marlow of Sunnyside Village, Sarasota, died of a sudden heart attack on August 12, 2013. She was 90.
She was born in Newton, Massachusetts on November 22, 1922, the daughter of Florence and Paul Douglass. She grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey and graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1941. Until several years ago, she organized multi-year reunions for RHS graduates, including picnics for hundreds of graduates, at the Siesta Key beach.
She married Alfred S. Marlow in 1942 and they raised four children in Ridgewood where she was active in the Upper Ridgewood Community Church, Women's Club, her childrens' scouting activities and P.E.O., a Philanthropic Educational Organization. She often traveled with her husband, either because of his pump manufacturing business, or for pleasure. After their children were grown they traveled extensively in their R.V., throughout the U.S.A. They lived in Sharon, Connecticut, Franklin Lakes, New Jersey and Leola, Pennsylvania. Since 1968 they have also maintained a home in Sarasota, first on Longboat Key and then in the Meadows. She has been an active resident of Sunnyside Village since 2005, as a volunteer for the Jesters, the bell-choir, the Sunnyside Yacht Club and the Gift Shop.
Last November, to mark her 90th birthday, all of her children, spouses, and all ten grandchildren gathered in Siesta Key for a grand celebration.
Grace was best known for her thoughtful, caring, and loving devotion to her family and friends. Her birthday calendar was overflowing with notations and the cards were always sent at the right time, in order to arrive on the appropriate day. She never failed to express a loving concern to all around her and her family and friends were extremely fortunate to be embraced within the circle of her love.
Her husband of 44 years, Alfred S. Marlow, pre-deceased her in 1986. She was pre-deceased by her great-grandchild, Jay Randall Marlow. She was the last surviving sibling of her sister, Ruth Douglass DeArmond and brothers, Paul White Douglass and Jesse Douglass. She is survived by her children, Anne Marlow Vose and her husband Warren of Edgartown, Massachusetts; Douglass Lee Marlow and his wife Linda DeYoung of Falmouth, Massachusetts; Jean Marlow Dillon of Wendell, North Carolina; Nancy Marlow Drago and her husband Joseph of Clinton Corners, New York and former daughter-in-law Judith O. Marlow of Littleton, Colorado. Her ten grandchildren include David Warren Vose and wife Margaret; Stuart Marlow Vose and wife Julie; Craig Douglass Marlow and wife Kim; Lee Randall Marlow and wife Marla; Corina Elizabeth Fisher; Kyle Travis Conklin and wife Kim; Chad Robert Conklin and wife Brooke; Karly Conklin Ackley and husband John; Christopher Daniel Drago and Elizabeth M. Drago and husband Neil Regan. These ten devoted grandchildren brought twenty great-grandchildren into Grace's growing family. In addition she welcomed three step-children and seven step-great-grandchildren. June Rose Marlow, sister-in-law and life-long friend, also of Sunnyside Village, and Lois Smith of Nashville, Tennessee, her dear friend of 75 years, survive her.
A Memorial Service will be performed at the new Chapel at Sunnyside Village on Sunday, August 18 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sunnyside Foundation, 5201 Bahia Vista Street, Sarasota, Florida 34232.
