David Reese Murray II, of Osprey, Florida, born in Traverse City, Michigan on June 18, 1925, the eldest son of David R. Murray and Mary Carol H. Murray died Saturday, November 16, 2013. He was 88 years old. He is preceded in death by his younger brother Jerry Murray, by his first wife Jane Badgley Murray, by his second wife Gwen Royce Murray; sons, Carl Badgley Murray, John Hoffman Murray, Evan Douglas Murray , and Chris Howell Murray. He is survived by his wife Vigdis Murray, sons, David Reese (Leah) Murray III, Peter Chandler Murray, his brother Ben A. (Gloria) Murray, sister Sally (Donald) Grishaw, his grandchildren; Peter Chandler Murray, Carl Badgley Murray, David Reese Murray IV, Samantha Jane Murray, Lucas Franklin Murray, Hadley Hoffman Murray, Reese Chandler Murray and Callie Allen Murray. David attended school on the Old Mission Peninsula as well as Middle School and High School in Traverse City where upon graduating in 1944 he enlisted in the US Army and served in Europe during World War II. Returning home after the war, David attended the University of Michigan graduating in 1950 with a BA degree in History. He taught History and English at the Traverse City Central High School and later taught History and Art History at the Interlochen Arts Academy. David also farmed a number of fruit farms on the Old Mission Peninsula initially with his father and then with his sons, the largest farm, Ridgewood, was on the tip of the Old Mission Peninsula. In 1954 he married his first wife Jane Badgley and started a family that would grow to three sets of twins, all boys, all born within four years. In 1967 David retired from teaching and moved his family to Nokomis, Florida for the school year while farming half the year on the Old Mission Peninsula. Selling off most of the farms in the 1990's and 2000's, David retired full time to Florida. David was a wonderful husband, father, teacher, mentor and grandfather. A celebration of David's life will be held in Nokomis, Florida in mid-April 2014 this coming spring and a memorial service will be held in Traverse City, Michigan next summer at the Murray Family memorial plot in the Oakwood Cemetery.
