Nov. 1, 1977 - Feb. 14, 2014
Steven Andrew Larkin, age 36, of Sarasota, Florida, died unexpectedly on February 14, 2014 in a car accident. Steve was born on November 1, 1977 in Toronto, Canada to Ron and Rasma Larkin. He grew up with siblings Kari (Larkin) Dunschede and Ron Larkin. As a young boy Steve loved playing ice hockey on Toogood Pond, participating in sports like baseball and golf, and playing all kinds of games with the neighborhood kids. During high school Steve was an active member of both the golf and tennis teams, winning MVP for the golf team one season. Steve graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury High School in 1996, then went on to attend Babson College, and received a Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences from Harvard Extension School in 2006. Steve volunteered as a Big Brother when he lived in Boston and worked as a crisis counselor at Parents Helping Parents, a job he was passionate about. He also worked at a dog shelter and had a special way with all animals, but especially dogs. Boston always felt like home to Steve, and he even named his dog after the city. Steve met his wife, Britton (Boydston) Larkin in Boston in 2003, and they were married October 3, 2009 in Sarasota, Florida. Steve became a father on January 26, 2012 to Kai Larkin, a son who brought him great joy. Steve worked as a tennis professional for several years while living in Florida, teaching both adults and children. He was a patient teacher and competitive athlete. Additionally, Steve participated in a recreational tennis league, one year winning his division. He was also a life- long Washington Redskins fan who rarely missed a game.
Steve was a gentle and kind soul who walked through this sometimes hurried and unfair world in a peaceful way. Those who met him were touched by his caring light. He had a deep laugh and a way of lightening the mood even in some of the most tragic or difficult times. Steve was a gifted musician who played both bass and acoustic guitar, and used music to soothe and uplift those around him. He had a gift for making people feel welcome, and showed particular kindness to those who were struggling in life. Steve was happiest in the company of family or with his feet planted in the sand. He was a tender and loving father who loved teaching his son how to count and catch a football.
Steve was the beloved husband of Britton (Boydston) Larkin, and beloved father of Kai Benjamin Larkin, both of Sarasota, Florida. He was the treasured son of Ron and Rasma Larkin of Englewood, Florida, and loving brother to Kari Dunschede (Dirk Dunschede) of Naples, Florida, and Ron Larkin (Kara Fiechtner) of St. Petersburg, Florida. He was a special uncle to Tristan Dunschede, Avia Dunschede, and Lucas Larkin.
A gathering for Steve will be held Friday, February 21st from 7pm to 9 pm at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, 40 North Orange Avenue, Sarasota, FL 34236. A Memorial Celebration of Steve's Life will be held on Saturday, February 22nd at 11 am at the same location.
