Joseph Smucker Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Smucker, 75, of Sarasota, passed away May 15, 2014. He was born in Orrville, Ohio, on May 24, 1938. He graduated from Orrville High School in 1956 and later graduated from Ohio State University. Joe worked for The William Annat Company, Orrville Milk Company and had a long career with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Milk Safety, retiring in 2001.
He had a life long love of music/singing and participated with many choral groups. Joe moved from Sterling, VA, to Sarasota after retirement seven years ago. Joe will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Joe is survived by his wife of 24 years, Patricia. They were married January 12, 1990, in Sterling, VA. He is also survived by his children: Geoffrey Smucker, Eric (Pat) Smucker, Ruth Huxley, Scott (Lisa) Smucker, Kristi Smucker, and Matthew (Melissa) Puccinelli and grandchildren Amanda (Christopher) Peretti, Elizabeth (Dan) Legullion, Grant (Elizabeth) Smucker, Cody (Ava) Smucker, Gregory, Steven, Rachel, and Holly Smucker, Allyson and Emily Hill, Olivia, Emma, and Matthew Puccinelli, Jr., and one great grandchild, Vincenzo Peretti. Surviving siblings include Larry (Linda) Smucker, Ken (Judy) Smucker, Bruce (Linda) Smucker, Barb (John) Steiner, and Jean Kimberlin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Levi J. Smucker and Dorothy Marsh Smucker, siblings Jim and Nancy Smucker, and a son, Kevin Smucker.
Memorial services will be held at Harvest United Methodist Church (14305 Covenant Way, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34202), on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at the church.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations may be made to the Pack-A-Sack Ministry of Harvest United Methodist Church which benefits the families of Samoset Elementary School or to Tidewell Hospice, (5955 Rand Blvd. Sarasota 34238).
Services also will be held in Orrville, Ohio, on May 31, 2014, 11 a.m. at the Orrville Christian Church, 925 N. Elm Street, followed by a reception at the church.
Gulf Coast Cremations is in charge of the arrangements.

Dear Pat,
I am so deeply saddened to hear of Joe's passing. Although my time knowing him was brief, my days were made much richer every time I saw him smile. I hope the years you were blessed to spend together and the many memories that you shared give you peace and comfort.

I was so sorry to hear about Joe. It was always nice to see you both when you were back in Sterling and came to Galilee. Always was hoping that he would come back to the choir and then you all moved away! My prayers and thoughts are with you and the family. Joe was a wonderful man!

We sang with Joe in Sterling, VA, as a part of BRAPA. He was wonderful and caring as he helped us be part of the group. I remember his car's plate JAM MAN. David and Ginger Wilkinson

Dear Pat, I never really knew Joe, but I worked with his dad Levi J. Smucker as a conductor on the Pennsylvania rail road out of Akron, Ohio. I'm 88 yrs. old and was reading the obituaries, when I ran across your last name, then was surprised to see Levi's name mentioned as Joe's dad. I remember that he used to talk about Joe & the rest of the kids. Now & then Levi and I worked the Orrville yard job and switched box cars in & out of Smucker's Jelly, and they almost always gave the crew a case of Jelly or Jam to split among ourselves. Levi was a wonderful friend, and I'm so sorry to hear about Joe's passing. The Smuckers are a great family & warmly regarded. I wish you well, and will remember Joe & you in my prayers tonight.

Sorry to hear of Joe's death. I will remember him from the many family reunions growing up and as an adult. My deepest sympathy to entire family.
