George R. Manser of Sarasota FL died June 1, 2014. Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Jeanne; daughter, Pamela (Dan) Guthrie, Columbus, OH, sons: Richard (Liza) Manser, Elburn, IL, Ronald (Susie) Manser, Westerville, OH, Michael Manser, Columbus, OH; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Nicholas, Patrick, Amanda, Emily, Molly, Steven, Megan, Derek, Jacob, Jesse, 3 great grandchildren, and a brother, Jim (Ellie) Manser, Mountain View, CA.
Born in Minneapolis, MN, he was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and received his Master's degree from Capital University. In the early 1960's he was the administrative assistant to Governor Elmer Andersen of Minnesota. He and the family moved to Columbus, OH in 1967 where he served as President and CEO of North American National Corp. and its subsidiaries, and became its chairman in 1984. Manser served on numerous corporate boards throughout his career, including Cardinal Health, State Auto Financial Corp. and Hallmark Financial Services. He was Chairman of the National Association of Life Insurance Companies and is listed in 'Who's Who in America'. He was an active Kiwanian serving as President of the Kiwanis Club of Columbus and later Lt. Governor. He served as Advisory Board Chairman of the Salvation Army of Columbus and Chairman of the Board of Augustana College. Since moving to Sarasota in 1999, Manser was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Sarasota, on the board of Dial Hope, an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and was currently serving as the Chairman of the Board of the Pines of Sarasota. He was a strong proponent of philanthropy and gave generously to a variety of charitable organizations.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 29, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church.
