Carol Spalding Obituary
June 19, 1945 - January 29, 2017
Carol Kersting Spalding, age 71, died in Sarasota, Florida on Sunday, January 29, 2017.
Born June 19, 1945, at Fort McClellan, Alabama to Laura Demmer and Donald A. Kersting, she attended Kansas University before graduating from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing with her BSN in 1968, and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. After spending her youth living all over the United States and Germany as part of a big Army family, once she set roots in Sarasota, Florida in January 1971, she never moved away.
Carol worked as a Registered Nurse in the office of Dr. George A. Bishopric for nearly thirty years until his retirement in 1997, at which time she was welcomed to the office family of Sarasota Surgical Specialists until her retirement in 2012.
Carol was a strong believer in volunteerism and community service. She was a life-long Girl Scout and served as assistant troop leader and cookie mom for over a decade, and is a former member of the Junior League of Sarasota and the Sarasota Panhellenic Association. She was one of the founding members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, having joined for the first mass at Gulf Gate Elementary School in 1979, and enjoyed serving on the church Women's Club. She loved spending time with her family, domestic and international travel, and was always looking forward to her next trip with her sisters or wonderful friends, but always loved returning to her home and cats in Sarasota, her adopted hometown.
Her immediate survivors include her daughter Stephanie Spalding Cook (Steven), granddaughter Parker Adeline Cook, of Virginia Beach, Virginia and three sisters, Geni (Roy) Cox of Greenwood, South Carolina, Ann (Tom) Mitchell of Jacksonville, Florida, and Laurie (Jim) McVay of Tampa, Florida.
Services will be held Monday, February 6, at 9:30 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2506 Gulf Gate Drive, Sarasota, FL., 34231. Memorial contributions are welcome and may be sent to St. Thomas More at the address above.
