Vera Gertrude Sullivan Obituary
Sullivan, Vera Gertrude; April 9, 2014. Born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton Island in the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada on April 15, 1923 to William David and Mary Elizabeth (Morrison) MacNamara (both now deceased). The family moved to Wyandotte, Michigan in 1924 where her brother, Earl James McNamara was born in 1925. Vera graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Wyandotte, then attended Marygrove College and was married to William (Bill) John Sullivan on June 19, 1943 who served in the U.S. Army occupations of Europe and Japan. Vera joined him when later stationed in San Luis Obispo, California. Bill was longtime owner of Lynch and Sullivan Furniture and later served as Mayor of Wyandotte and Wayne County Commissioner before his retirement. Vera traveled with Bill in the 1960’s to their sister city Komaki, Japan representing Wyandotte. Vera was a longstanding member of the Michigan State Garden Society serving as board member and president of the organization. Vera was instrumental to the process to create the Michigan State University Extension-Master Gardener Program in 1976 and then served as a horticulturist, and instructor for the Master Gardener Program of Wayne County at their offices in Wayne, Michigan. Vera was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Sullivan; and her brother, Earl and his spouse, Onah McNamara. She is survived by their children: nephews, Patrick (Carolyn), Timothy, Terrence, Susan (widow Kevin deceased), Brian; and niece, Margaret Cox; in addition to 5 grand nieces; 3 grand nephews; 6 great grand-nieces and nephews. On the Sullivan side she is survived by children of Bill’s 3 deceased sisters. Lucille (Beatty): Marylou Mahalak, Suzanne McCandless and Therese Hoover, Madeleine (Pemberton), Tom Pemberton (Linda), and Dorothy (Cassidy), Kay Roumell (spouse Chuck) and Maureen (Jerry) Keast; in addition to 5 grand-nieces, 8 grand-nephews and 17 great grand-nieces and nephews. Visitation Sunday 3 to 8 p.m. at The Allen Park Chapel-Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 10915 Allen Rd., Allen Park. Funeral Service Monday, In State 9:30 a.m. until Mass 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 140 Superior St., Wyandotte. Burial Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
