Arthur Thomas Gibbs Obituary
Gibbs, Arthur “Art” Thomas; 84; of Coldwater; passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2014; at Drews Place of Coldwater. A Memorial Service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 29, 2014; at Dutcher Funeral Home, in Coldwater, officiated by Pastor Terry Siler from First Congregational Church of Bronson. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Dutcher Funeral Home. Art was born January 27, 1930, to Ray and Luella (Horner) Gibbs, in Ypsilanti. Upon graduation from high school, he continued his education at Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor’s of Agricultural Engineering. Art married the love of his life, Joan Ford on August 18, 1951, in Ypsilanti. Joan and Arthur moved the family from Ypsilanti to Coldwater in 1968, where they established Gibbsfield Farms. Arthur was very active in the community and farming world. He was past Branch County President of the Farm Bureau, and co-founder of the Branch County Junior Livestock Association. Art was a member of the Argi-Business Association, Country Couples, MSU Alumni Association, and the Branch County Fair Association, where he served on the board of directors. He was a member of the Bronson United Methodist Church. Art always put his family first. He enjoyed traveling to Arizona, where he was a member of Gold Canyon United Methodist Church. Outside of family and farming, Art enjoyed attending MSU football games, singing in the church choir, and being out with friends. He will be remembered as being friendly, outgoing, and a leader. Arthur is survived by his son, Dennis (Barb) Gibbs of Kalamazoo; his daughters, Suzanne (Glenn) Preston of Quincy, Janette (Mick) Swihart of Fulton, Diane Gibbs of Grand Rapids, and Dilly (Pat) Harrison of Coldwater; his grandchildren, Dan Gibbs, Doug Gibbs, David (Allison) Preston, Elizabeth Preston, Adam (Crystal) Preston, Jackie (Ryan) Bounds, Pam (Andy) Acker, Greg (Erika) Swihart, Cameron Harrison, and Taylor Harrison; his great grandchildren, Natalie Bounds, Courtney Bounds, Alec Preston, and Henrik Acker; many nieces and nephews. Art was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Joan Gibbs; his brothers, Robert R. and Howard W. Gibbs.
