SHIRLEY JEAN HUTCHINSON 8/16/1924 - 7/10/2013 Shirley (Dohrman) Hutchinson, 88, a long time resident and local business woman, died at home peacefully with her beloved family by her side on July 10, 2013 following a brief illness. Born on August 16, 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska, she was the third and last living child of Arthur and Gladys Dohrman. Shortly later, her family relocated to Houston, Texas. She often recounted what a wonderful job her devoted parents did in raising her and her two older brothers during the depression years. She shared stories of a happy childhood on the family farm surviving on their collective ingenuity and resourcefulness. A high school basketball star, she graduated at the top of her class at 16 years old. She contributed to the war effort working at the Long Beach Naval Shipyards, where she met and married Lloyd Sterling "Hutch" Hutchinson in 1945. They went on to travel the western United States working on federal construction projects after the war. Shirley lived in Apple Valley from 1959 until her passing. With a sharp mind for business, Shirley embarked on many successful business ventures including opening the first children's store in the valley, owning and operating the historic Branding Iron for many years, working as Comptroller for Hi-Desert Casino and partnering in Smokey's Little Italy with Smokey Rogers. Involved with Apple Valley Dancing Hooves from its inception, she spent countless hours shuffling her girls and their horses to participate in equestrian events. An avid sports fan and LA Dodgers, LA Lakers supporter, Shirley didn't think twice about loading the kids up and heading for Chavez Ravine to see Sandy Koufax pitch his magic. In 1964, she miraculously procured tickets for her teenagers to see The Beatles play their historic performance at The Hollywood Bowl. Shirley was a strong, capable and caring woman with a quick wit and intelligent curiosity. She could light up a room with her million dollar smile and was known for her infectious laughter. She was a devoted and exemplary mother adored by her children. She provided a happy, loving home. Even with her busy schedule, she put a home cooked meal on the table every night. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
