Charles Stowe Brown HICKORY Charles Stowe Brown followed his path to heaven late on the night of Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013. He was at Hospice in Hickory, and died of pneumonia complicated by Parkinsons disease. Stowe was born May 16, 1939, in Lincoln County, to the late Mary and Pressley Brown. He moved to Hickory when he was 15 years old. After 38 years of service at MDI as Transportation Manager, he retired in 1995. To hundreds of MDI employees, he was much more than their leader, he was a father figure and assisted many in their personal lives. Left to carry on his memory are his wife, Barbara Brown, of Hickory; and two stepsons, Kenny and Kerry Hollar. Left to carry on his legacy are one daughter, Donna Brown Self, of Lincolnton and husband, David D. Self; one grandson, Michael Brown Smith; one son, David Carlton Brown, of Granite Falls; one grandaughter, Sarah Brown; one sister, Myrtle Simmons, of Crouse; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two half sisters; five half brothers; and his first, wife Dean Brown Starnes. The family has entrusted arrangements to Bass-Smith Funeral Home, and will receive friends and family at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. Both the receiving and memorial will be held at Bass-Smith, Hickory. Memorials may be made to Catawba Regional Hospice or Carolina Rehab of Burke County.
