Rod Newman, 90, of Denver died peacefully Wednesday morning, Oct. 9, 2013.
He was born June 24, 1923, in Arkansas City, Kan., to Albert and Mate (McMillen) Newman.
Rod was a World War II veteran who trained at Lowry and served in England in the Army Air Corps. A 1948 graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, he married Eleanor Jean Gray in 1947.
Rod was an avid golfer, fisherman, hunter, gardener, grill guy, Mr. fix-it tool-guy, storyteller, model-airplane builder and traveler. He loved watching the birds at the feeders in the Buffalo Creek home he shared with his wife, Eleanor. He was a huge fan of the CU Buffaloes and the Denver Broncos.
He was an active leader in the Optimist Club and Salesmen with a Purpose in the Denver area and filled leadership roles in Buffalo Creek, especially with the Buffalo Park Improvement Association.
Rod will be deeply missed by his family, including his wife and three daughters, Karen Newman (David Christerson) of Denver, Cindy Newman of Evergreen, and Sue (Brad) Goris of Alliance, Ohio; two grandchildren, Matthew (Freya) Gaertner and Bryn Gaertner; and two great-grandchildren, Corinne and Genevieve Gaertner. He will also be missed by his loyal friend, his dog, Brandy.
Rod enjoyed a "celebration of life" party in late May when more than 70 friends and family honored him and Eleanor.
Memorial contributions may be made to the North Fork Fire Protection District, P.O. Box 183, Buffalo Creek, CO 80425.
